Seventh Direction
Seventh Direction
Seventh Direction is a series of seven floor sculptures referencing the potiza, a Taíno water vessel. These are made with concrete, dirt, sand, dried grasses, and red earth pigments, referencing the architectural materiality of the island landscape: handmade bohios, plantation ruins, brick streets, dirt roads. The hermaphroditic iconography of the potiza speaks to the ancient two-spirit role within Taíno culture and resembles the contemporary heart-shaped symbol that becomes the gateway of interdimensional connection. Each form is a mutation of the next as the neck of the potiza, which is designed to protect the liquid inside from unwanted entities, travels around the surfaces of the form.
